When to use a pie chart

A pie chart is useful for showing how a whole is divided into parts, such as budget share, sales sources, survey choices, market share, or spending categories. It helps users quickly see which parts are largest.

Pie charts work best with a small number of categories. If there are too many categories, similar values, or a need for precise comparison, a bar chart is often easier to read.

Formula or logic

  • Category value ÷ total value = share
  • All shares should add up to about 100%
  • Slice angle is based on the category share

Example

If monthly spending is divided into rent, food, transportation, entertainment, and other expenses, a pie chart can show which category takes the largest share.

Common questions

Is a pie chart good for many categories?

No. Too many slices make the chart difficult to read.

Can pie chart values be negative?

Usually no. A pie chart represents parts of a whole, so negative values do not fit well.

What is the difference between a pie chart and a doughnut chart?

A doughnut chart has a blank center, which can make the chart feel lighter or hold a total value.
