How speed, distance, and time relate

This calculator solves any one of speed, distance, and time when the other two are known. It is useful for physics practice, driving estimates, running, cycling, travel time, delivery planning, and everyday speed checks.

Use consistent units. If distance is in kilometers and time is in hours, speed will be in km/h. If distance is in meters and time is in seconds, speed will be in m/s.

Formula or logic

  • Speed = Distance ÷ Time
  • Distance = Speed × Time
  • Time = Distance ÷ Speed

Example

If the distance is 120 km and the average speed is 60 km/h, the travel time is 2 hours. Actual arrival time may be longer if stops and traffic are included.

Common questions

Is average speed the same as instant speed?

No. Average speed is total distance divided by total time, while instant speed is speed at one moment.

Which time unit should I use?

Use the unit that fits the context. Travel often uses hours; physics problems often use seconds.

Can this estimate trip time?

Yes for a quick estimate, but traffic, stops, lights, and road conditions can change the real time.
